As a city, Leicester offers a range of attractions from museums, to history to football and beyond. During your apart hotel stay, make sure you take some time out to visit Abbey Park, a little gem just north of the city with the river running right through the middle.
With the river come historic bridges, all kinds of wildlife and the tranquil sounds of moving water. There’s a lake in the centre of the park where you can hire a boat and spend an hour or two messing about on the water, fun for young and old alike! You can also take a trip around the park on the miniature railway, to get your bearings or simply see the kids smile. Children will also adore Pet’s Corner where they can get up close to goats, rabbits and guinea pigs and see the exotic birds.
Sporty types can play a round of tennis on one of the hard courts or test their concentration on the bowling green, play table tennis, get lost in the scensational lavender maze or even follow an orienteering course. After all that exertion, treat yourself to lunch or a snack at the delightful Peppercorn Café, serving delicious food to eat in or take away all day long. The ideal location for lunch in style.
Once you’ve eaten your fill, take a leisurely walk around the sensory garden to aid your digestion before embarking on the next adventure. On the west side of the river dividing the park, you’ll find the ruins of the Park’s namesake Abbey. A twelfth-century abbey that was once one of the most wealthy Augustinian abbeys in the country, closed in 1538. You’ll also find the remains of 17th century Cavendish house, a mansion built from the remains of the original Abbey. With something for everyone, Abbey Park is one place you’ll want to visit time and again.
