The Triumphal Way leads all the way from the Etoile at the Arc de Triomphe all the way down to La Defense, where the visitor is welcomed with a Great Arch. Designed by Danish architect Otto von Spreckelsen, the 106m wide arch was designed as a modern counterpart to the Arc de Triomphe.
Most of the buildings in the La Defense area are big – huge towers and skyscrapers dominate this mainly business area; the tallest is the GAN tower at 179m high. La Defense is one of the best places to have a rental apartment for a city break in Paris. The area is also big on culture being probably most famous for the Jean Michel Jarre concert in 1990 that attracted 2.5m people.
Shop ‘til you Drop
The Quatre Temps shopping centre was the largest shopping centre in Europe when it was built, featuring 230 shops, several cinemas with 16 screens available showing both French and foreign films with subtitles and 40 restaurants. It is easily accessible from both the underground station and the Great Arch. Every September the area comes to life with a free street art festival with open air theatre, dance, music, opera and circus acts from more than 20 individual companies performing. Also not to be missed are the 67 works of art that are dotted around the public areas of La Defense. Start your tour by the kiosk and find iconic and emblematic sculptures between the towers and under the Great Arch.
