Obviously when most people think of spending city breaks Cologne, the Cathedral is the first place they visit. This stunning Gothic masterpiece is quite rightly a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is Cologne’s most visited attraction.
But, there are numerous other wonderful places to see including the Town Hall with its 900 years of history, no less than 12 Romanesque churches adorned with fantastic sculptures and paintings and the numerous memorials and wells that are dotted around the city. Base yourself in a rental apartment in the city centre and you will be able to easily see everything.
Music, Theatre and Opera for all
Cologne Philharmonic Hall is close to the Cathedral and stages concerts nearly every day. The Opera House is currently undergoing restoration work and performances are being held at “Oper Köln am Dom” which is located right on the banks of the Rhine river. There are 13 other theatres in Cologne with everything from comedy to traditional puppet theatre. The newly built waterfront Rheinauhafen district also has restaurants, shops and galleries to fascinate for hours and for literally the high point of your stay, try out the 50 year old cable car which was the first cable car in Europe to cross a river. Cologne has more than 36 museums and over 100 galleries, so with such a huge selection you will find everything from Roman history through to contemporary art. And if you want to chill and relax there are 7 parks, gardens and forest to try out.
